End of Fire | Illustration Gallery

I am excited to share the new illustration gallery for The End of Fire. We now have 72 illustrations by Matt Schmidt, including a series of SunCell reactor prototypes.

Exploding test cell

One of my favorites is an image of a prototype cell exploding, as seen in a YouTube video from one of Brilliant Light Power’s test runs.

Although the new book has 15% new material, it is almost exactly the same length; this is a result of removing about 15% of the text from the first edition for brevity, as well as removing data tables, complex chemical spectra, and equations. Other changes include relying on footnotes for citations and technical data; and the book has a full bibliography and index according to standard conventions.

I have also reduced the size of illustrations and consolidated them in new ways. For this edition I have performed the entire layout myself, elevating my skill set to full interior book design. Doing everything myself was time-consuming but fun, and I enjoyed digging into my personal library to find the best interior layouts.

Publication is now expected in March 2025.
